Curation

Music industry panels, workshops, events and festivals

In Place of War has a longstanding history of curating music industry events across festivals and cultural events. This includes as consultants on the development of new music industry events, such as Primavera Pro in Spain, DoaDoa in Uganda and Shoko Festival, Zimbabwe, and as curators and designers of panel talks - with partnerships including Tallinn Music Week in Estonia, Festival Convida in Brazil, and Amsterdam Dance Event.

We design panels that speak to music as culture, rather than music as commerce. We explore music that happens in the margins and we explore how music is being used as a tool for social change. We look at the underground spaces, clubs and festivals that are breaking the mould, even at the risk of their own safety. We explore music in war zones and why people continue to make it at times of crisis.

We have worked with:

Panelists we have programmed:

  • Ed O’Brien, Radiohead

  • Marcus Ross, FUGA

  • Kim Rowell, ITN/BBC

  • Sama Abdulhadi, Palestine

  • MABE, Venezuela

  • Giorgi Kikonishvili, Bassiani, Georgia

  • Naja Orashvili, Bassiani, Georgia

  • Wizzy, Queens Against Borders, Syria

  • Mahmood Jrere, DAM/PMX, Palestine

  • Black Twang, Rapper, UK

Curation

Academic panels and workshops

In Place of War started as a major Arts & Humanities Research Council (AHRC) funded research project at The University of Manchester in 2004, and spun out as a charity in 2015. It’s a living example of the legacy a research project can have, as it continues to positively impact the lives of thousands of people in communities facing conflict, many of whom were part of the initial research. It shows how research can be symbiotic and how research can feed into practice, and how practice can feed into future research projects.

This relationship with academia has continued to this day, winning multiple major funding bids and awards and being part of many interdisciplinary research networks. We are often asked to speak about the journey of In Place of War, which CEO & Artistic Director, Ruth Daniel, and Director of Research and Education, Teresa Bean, talk about with passion and sensitivity.
