Developing war-torn Uganda’s Creative Industries and Entrepreneurs

CONFLICT

Since its independence from Britain in 1962, the east African nation has endured a military coup, brutal dictatorship, disputed elections and a five-year war that brought current President Yoweri Museveni to power in 1986. The country has also had to contend with a brutal 20-year insurgency in the north, led by the Lord’s Resistance Army. While the country has won praise for its vigorous campaign against HIV/AIDS it has also attracted international attention for its hardening stance against the LGBT community.

ACTION

In Place of War saw the incredible creative talent in some of the most marginalised communities in the world and working with 20 countries in the global South developed a University-certified Creative and Social Entrepreneurial (CASE) Programme. Through a ‘Train the Trainer’ programme, local people are trained with the support of 500 digital resources, course books and ‘Knowledge Networks’ then remain in the community.

RESULTS

Through a year-long CASE training programme in Kampala and Gulu, In Place of War is working with 60 entrepreneurs setting up 20 new businesses. In Place of War has supported the development of creative start-ups from hip-hop agri-business to cultural space development. Through networking events and mapping of the creative industries in Uganda, In Place of War is also helping to develop the creative infrastructure and develop new opportunities for those who have faced the consequences of conflict.
