Ethical & Cultural Tourism Programme (ECTP)

The idea for the Ethical and Cultural Tourism Programme came via members of the Change-maker Network who identified the need for specific training around tourism. The course has been designed both for those already working in the creative industries at a grassroots or community level who want to explore tourism as a route to financial sustainability, and also for those who are seeking to develop an initial tourism project around the cultural skills or knowledge in their community.

Aims

This course seeks to develop practical skills and knowledge and set participants on course to launch an ethical and cultural tourism business. The course aims to help learners understand the tourism industry, particularly ethical and cultural tourism, and to recognise the challenges and opportunities of post Covid-19 tourism for their communities. By learning about different models of developing ethical and cultural tourism through a wide range of case studies, students will reflect and apply the learning to their own contexts. The materials guide learners through the process of creating a proposal for a tourism business; facilitating the analysis of their local contexts; business planning; marketing; and building skills in budgeting, risk management and digital tools. The course aims to encourage the exploration of social change, and the possible social, cultural, political, economic and environmental impacts of tourism, and how to build a sustainable tourist offer and mitigate any negative impacts. It also aims to build presentation skills, with students presenting their proposed tourism projects to their peers.

UNITS

The course consists of seven units delivered over eight weeks. Each unit consists of two to four classes lasting approximately 1.5 hours with an additional 1-2 hours of self-study recommended per class.
