GRRRL is an electronic music collaboration between revolutionary women, brought together by ‘In Place of War’, a global organisation that supports artistic creativity in places of conflict as a tool for positive change. Together, these eight fierce influential artists have worked with Laima Leyton (Mixhell/Soulwax) to create a music and touring project that powerfully tells their collective stories and demonstrates how artistic creativity can conquer conflict around the world. Fusing together sounds of dark techno, ghetto bass, hip-hop, dancehall, reggae, soul and electronica.
GRRRL is directed by Laima Leyton and features an eclectic mix of influential artists including Mercury Prize winning rapper Speech Debelle, Queen of Brazilian Dancehall Lei Di Dai, Zimbabwe’s Rap Queen AWA – African Women Arise, Young Lioness of Africa Wiyaala, Original Nu-Jazz and folk singer from Cape Town Nono Nkoane, British Bangladeshi singer Sohini Alam, DJ and percussionist from Caracas MABE and electronic artist/synth player from UK/Ghana Afrodeutsche.
After communicating and collaborating online for a month, the GRRRLs physically came together in the UK for 4 days to create a new body of work. GRRRL previewed to full capacity VIP audience at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club Bar, toured to Shambala Festival, Greenbelt Festival, Hull Freedom Festival and sold out club shows in London and Manchester. GRRRL were voted band of the festival at Shambala Festival.
GRRRL recently performed at the Closing Celebration of the Commonwealth Games in Australia as part of Festival 2018. This will be followed by an Australian tour to Sydney and Melbourne.
