IN PLACE OF WAR IRELAND
In Place of War has worked in sites of conflict, political oppression and post-conflict for nearly two decades. Whilst our work has historically focused on supporting arts-based peacebuilding in the Global South, given the current climate of tension, there is a critical need to bring this work to Europe.
Ireland is a logical starting point for the organisation, given the current tensions created by Brexit and the recent history of peace and conflict on the island of Ireland. Furthermore, Ireland offers a rich point of reference of how civil society has engaged the arts as a response to conflict and to build peace.
To this end, we have set up In Place of War Ireland with a view to develop new work in Ireland and Europe. In Place of War Ireland has four overarching aims:
To generate new cultural and educational opportunities for positive social change in diverse communities on the island of Ireland.
To create new partnerships with Irish entities working at the intersections of the arts, social change, education, research and peacebuilding, to strengthen civil society responses to critical issues facing Irish society.
To open new pathways for knowledge exchange and collaboration between stakeholders in Ireland, Europe and the Global South.
To support the development of Irish cultural and creative sectors in Europe through In Place of War’s participation as a founding partner of the EIT Culture and Creativity.
