Cultural Spaces & Organisation Development Programme (CSDP)

In Place of War has created a network of cultural spaces across the world, called NAFASI (meaning ‘space’ in Swahili). This programme explores how you can create a cultural space - from the architecture, to the mission & purpose, to creative activities, and a sustainability plan. It helps participants to understand how to achieve that in their community.

Overview of the programme

The programme is a blended learning package of video (250 resources), audio, text and online resources, drawing on real life case studies and developed in partnership with 40 international partners (from a range of contexts including Africa, Latin America, and Asia). As part of the learning experience, participants have the opportunity to connect with these international creative entrepreneurs. This takes the form of virtual workshops, seminars and meetings, to support learning and collaboration and to share experiences and knowledge.

The course contains a structured programme of activities covering ten themes. Each unit is accompanied by a detailed lesson plan outlining the aims and activities to be delivered in the session. Concurrently, students take part in ‘The Space Challenge’ which they are required to present at the end of the course. ‘The Space Challenge’ enables students to develop and present a proposal for a creative space or organisation. There are workshops to support students in preparation for ‘The Space Challenge’. The workshop sessions help students to apply ideas and concepts learnt in the lessons to develop a creative business plan.

In order to build local capacity, local people are recruited to deliver the CSDP to young people in their communities. The ‘Train the Trainer’ sessions, certified by the University of Manchester, aim to prepare trainers to deliver the CSDP through activities focused on teaching methodologies, classroom management and teaching practices and observations.
